Community High School

Miniature Horse Visits Calculus Class

When the typical student doesn’t do very well on a project, they usually don’t bring a pony to school.

But during sixth block on May 24, 2007 that’s exactly what CHS senior Chrissy Brownlee did.

Shortly after lunch, Brownlee surprised Community staff and students by showing up on the back lawn with her 130-pound miniature pony Lunar. But the horse’s visit to CHS wasn’t a senior prank, as many people thought. Instead, Brownlee had brought her pet to school as a surprise for her calculus class.

Brownlee felt like her project for Anne Thomas’s calculus class ‘wasn’t very good’, so she told Thomas that she would be bringing a surprise to class. After letting Lunar graze on the back lawn, Brownlee led the pony into Community and up to the third floor.

Lunar was led into the elevator as staff and students looked on with confusion. One teacher did come out of her amazement enough to ask if Brownlee had permission to bring a pony into school, but after some convincing on Brownlee’s part, this teacher turned a blind eye to the situation.

If Brownlee had any hope of sneaking Lunar into Thomas’s class, it was lost as they got off the elevator and onto the third floor. Just as the pair made their way past Kathe Hetter’s FOS class, Lunar let out a loud and deep whinny. Despite Hetter’s questioning of the farm animal being in school, Brownlee continued leading Lunar to her calculus class.

When Brownlee finally made her way to class, Thomas’s response was simply “is this your surprise?”

Lunar didn’t spend all of sixth block in class. Soon after getting into the school, Brownlee led Lunar back outside, with a small entourage of FOS I student’s trailing behind on the walk to the elevator.

“Only at Community,” many students said after seeing Lunar.
